Chapter 10

The wind was blustery cold. The earth under his bare body frigid.

Duke had stripped naked and lay exposed on the ground in a clearing behind the banshees’ cottage. A circle of power had been drawn around him with sacred white sand brought in from Diesel’s beach in Seaport. A pentacle marked his limbs, taut and bound to thick wood sticks dug deep into the soil.

Candles were lit all around to protect his spirit from wandering away in the no-realms where lost souls became trapped.

The necromancer wasn’t there as this was Black Oak Order business and his dealing with The Three not quite legitimate.

The Three who would restore his full gift tonight.

If he survived their test.

The Three, Morgan, Stanford, and Clarke. The original ancestors who’d received the power of sorcery under a sacred oak tree hundreds of years ago from a witch blessed with the craft. They had given Duke his legacy at birth. Duke had turned his back on them and they would make him pay.

Diesel would enact their will. And draw on the power of the four banshees around him to fuel his magic. The leader’s wife had remained behind, claiming she was spooked by all this sorcery and preferred the company of energetic little Sai and Elsa.

Duke couldn’t blame her.

Spread-eagle and vulnerably naked on the frosty ground, he twisted his head to have a self-conscious look at them all, poised at each point of the pentacle.

The three banshee elders stood crookedly in antiquated ceremonial robes adorned with glittery green and silver snakes along the hoods, Diesel looked otherworldly with his plain black hood covered in sigils with his deadly dagger Stormcaster in hand, ready to call on the elements, and at his left hand, was Sloane.

She looked fragile in a graceful, long, sea-green velvet dress, the wide sleeves covering her fingers. Her black hair secured in her long ponytail flew in the cold wind. Her skin glowed translucent under the moon. Marred with the thick milky scar at her neck and chest.

He glanced away from her gaze to avoid her seeing his fear. And he was scared senseless. No denying it.

No matter what he’d said, April Davenport’s words had cut right at him.

How could he go through with this with Sloane watching him scream? Shame and raw distress ran inside him as if he was still a boy. The kid looking at his dying mother with hopelessness, filled with the sobs of his heartbroken twin as their father sent them both away from Beechwood Court to shield the boys from their mother’s agonizing last days.

Why did this memory come to him all of a sudden? He had grown past that. Found solace in watching out for Knightley. In being the flawless and dutiful son his father had needed.

“Element of the east, element of the west, I call upon you.” Diesel’s gloomy chant casted upon the brisk ocean wind.

Duke did not want to see his leader. Did not want to watch the one about to bring supernatural tortures down on him.
